Unless you have loads of free time which I don't. Yes you should absolutely not have to spend the money to buy one of these things but for ten bucks, given the option, it doesn't make sense not too. So before you go through the trouble of ripping your system apart, packing it all up and driving it back to the store you may just want to purchase another adapter for $10 and save the effort. So the issue is definitely with those stupid adapter pieces becasue my first one somehow went bad. Now it's charging the computer again as well as powering it.
I then started researching the power adapter issues I was hearing about and decided to swap out that adapter (which came with the first display) with the adapter that came with my second display and that fixed the issue. It would show the plug icon so I knew it was powering the computer but no electric bolt so it was no longer charging it. The first display was powering the computer AND charging it for the first 2 months then all of a sudden it decided to stop working.
Look at the battery status icon at the right of the menu bar to see the battery level or charging status. To charge the battery, use the MagSafe 3 port or any of the Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) ports on your 14-inch or 16-inch MacBook Pro, or any of the Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports on your 13-inch MacBook Pro.
